Unimpressed by Shape Run 2009

This is the 3rd time that I've run in the Shape Run and I was really disappointed with the disorganised run this year. I hope that SPH who is responsible for Shape in Singapore will look into this and ensure that improvements are made.

1. The venue for the run was changed this year from the previous years of being flagged off from the Esplanade. The area around Millenia is rather small and the flag off stretch was so cramped. I didn't even hear the hosts or the fitness instructors. I didn't even do a warm up this year as I couldn't see the stage or hear any instructions over the PA system.

2. The route was not well marked. There were no distance indicators so, I didn't know how far I had run and how much further I had to go.

3. There were too few water stations. There was only 1 for the 5KM run and it only had water and not H2O or 100plus. Also, it's kinda annoying to drink from the hole pierced in the water cup...can't you look at having water in normal paper cups?

4. The finish line was packed with runners who weren't moving as they probably didn't know what to do after the run or where to go. I had to push my way through the finish line.

5. The water station after the finish line was so badly manned. Why do they not have cups already filled up when they see people finishing? I saw a guy struggling to open a H20 bottle to fill the cups. Why not just hand out cans of H20 that have been chilled? It would be a welcome relieve and be quicker instead of pouring.

6. The collection of the runners' kit was a complete mess. I had no idea where to lineup. The area in Millenia isnt sufficient to have 8000 people queing for the kit. I just joined the queue, amongst sweaty women and managed to get my runners' kit.

7. The Nike bracelet was nice. Thank you to Nike for the bracelet and for having the hunks hand them out :-) Though, they just randomly handed them out and some runners took more than one. Perhaps they should collect a tag or something in exchange for one bracelet so that everyone has one each. Also, all those runners who took more than one...shame on you  ! Don't be so greedy...your act resulted in others missing out.

8. I noticed that there were people who signed up for the run but didn't run and were just milling around in the mall (friends who waited for me witnessed this), waiting to collect the runners' kit. As the term indicates, it's a "runners' kit". It's selfish of you to sign up and not run. Your act of selfishness affects others who want to run but couldn't sign up as it was full. Perhaps Shape can give out the Runner's kit to those who registered running times only. Think about exchanging the timing bib for the Runners' kit.

Due to the lack of organisation and no improvements over the years, I doubt I would do the Shape run again. Unless of course the organisers take all this feedback and make a change to 2010.

Sunitha, I can't agree with you less. But I doubt they will improve, they are just out to make money and publicity.

WOW! I ABSOLUTELY AGREE WITH YOU, SUNITHA! The runner's kit should be for runners only and not for those who signed up and not participated... same goes for the finisher's bracelet which unfortunately many of us did not even get to collect one for themselves, just like me.

I HOPE THE ORGANIZER WILL FIND WAYS TO MAIL THE BRACELET TO RUNNERS WHO DID NOT MANAGE TO OBTAIN ONE AFTER THE RUN.

Sunitha, same sentiments!

This is my 1st time joining as ever since Shape Run started, me & my fellow running pals were not able to sign up on time until this yr... Hence, we were pretty excited for this run...

However, sad to say, it's my worst running event, as compared to the others I have been to...

Totally agreed on the lousy water points & distance markers! They are the most essential to a runner & yet so poorly managed...

Hi all,

We appreciate your feedback on this year’s run.
While we acknowledge that there is room for improvement, we would like to address some of your concerns.

- Nike bracelets
We regret that some runners did not receive the Nike bracelets. This was a "bonus" souvenir kindly given by Nike in addition to the runner's kit that each participant received. It is regrettable that this happened. We will work with our sponsor to better manage the distribution of the souvenir in our future runs.

- Timing
You can log on to www.shape.com.sg to view your timings.
Meanwhile your certificates will be mailed over to you within a month.

- Water stations
Under our sanctioning body, Singapore Athletics Association (SAA)'s recommendation, we have provided sufficient water stations for a 10km road race in our local condition.
We do however note your feedback and will take this into consideration for our future runs.

- Route
For safety of our runners, separate lanes were created with cones for the 5km and 10km runners. Road marshals were also present to guide the runners into their respective lanes.
We will continue to improve this system to provide a smoother run for our runners.

- Distance markers
We have placed the markers at the mid points of each category. We will consider to have more distance markers for our future runs.

Lastly, we value your feedback and will use them to better the run next year. We thank you for being part of Shape Run 2009.

standard answers - as expected,
unapologetic organisers - 'face' issues,
will improve - which year,
Anyway, made up my mind. Give up this disorganized event and join Nike Human Race or Sundown.
